vs.

The Welland All-Star Sportswear Tigers scored with 23 seconds remaining to tie the Guelph Jr. Storm Cooperators in Monday night’s SCTA Minor Midget action at the Welland Main Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the Jr. Storm finally broke onto the scoreboard with a power-play goal from #2 Tim Redwood at 11:17 of the second period, from #7 Martin Kudla and #9 Ian Bryant, to take a 1-0 lead.  Welland would answer right back with #7 Robert Wormald, assisted by #18 John Langel, beating Guelph netminder #35 Chris Wilford at 12:03 of the middle period to tie the game at one.

The Jr. Storm would then pull ahead on a short-handed marker by Kudla at 13:47, which was set up by #17 Michael Iacocca, allowing Guelph to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission.  #16 Josh Williams would score at 4:23 of the final frame from #9 Tanner Pagendam to once again put the home side even with the visitors.  The Jr. Storm would solve Tiger’s goaltender #30 Vince Quaranta for the third time, with Iacocca putting the puck past him on a helper from #16 Brett Hoy, to take a 3-2 advantage at 10:26.

With the net vacated in the final ninety seconds in favour of the extra-attacker, the Tigers would not be denied on this night, scoring with only 23 seconds left to play to earn the draw.  The scoring play on the last goal was not available from the game officials in time to be recorded before the conclusion of the game and will be updated here once it becomes known.

Final shots on goal, unofficially, were 38-21 in favour of the Tigers, who generated many great scoring chances throughout the contest but were simply unable to break this game open.  Welland was 0-for-4 on the power-play while surrendering a short-handed goal. By contrast, Guelph was 1-for-2 with the man-advantage on the evening.

Welland’s record improves to 6-24-2 while Guelph now sits at 4-21-3 on the season.  The Jr. Storm will play three games prior to returning to Welland on February 18, which is the next scheduled game for the Tigers.
