SIx Nations Rebels vs. Welland Vesuvius Warlords (OLA Jr. B Lacrosse)
Fans who attended Friday evening’s Jr. B battle between the powerhouse Six Nations Rebels and the plucky Welland Vesuvius Warlords no doubt walked away impressed with the strides the host team has taken to improve early on this season, despite the fact that they were on the wrong end of a 7-1 decision last night.
Standing resolute against the defending Ontario and Founders’ Cup Champions, the Warlords gave little ground early on in the contest, allowing only two goals during the opening twenty minutes of action. #19 Torrey VanEvery struck for the first goal of the game at 12:37, on an assist from #4 Marty Hill. The Rebels would go up by two goals, thanks to a power-play marker from Hill at 16:22, which was set-up by #18 Randy E. Johnson and #8 Ryley Johnson.
Nations overmatched the Warlords during the first three-quarters of the second period and it provided them with the three tallies that put the game out-of-reach. #21 Jordan Johnson scored twice in succession, at 1:10 and 7:29 of the middle stanza, to build up a 4-0 visitor’s advantage. Marty Hill provided helpers on both of the goals, with captain #77 Stu Hill adding a second assist on the first goal. Stu Hill would provide his second helper of the evening at 11:51 to allow #8 Ryley Johnson to put the ball past Welland netminder #39 Connor Danko, while his team was short-handed, for a 5-0 lead.
After watching the officials turn a blind eye to several Six Nations players who took liberties with their wooden lacrosse sticks behind the play, and with others being loudly encouraged from the Rebels’ bench to torpedo shots directly at the head of the small-statured Danko in the Warlords’ goal at every opportunity, two Welland players decided enough was enough and chose to defend themselves with 3:29 left in the middle frame. Fighting majors and 10-minute misconducts were assessed to all involved parties as Welland’s #43 Kris Lavoie and #4 Craig Stewart took on and defeated Stu and Marty Hill of Six Nations in a pair of quality fisticuff battles.
#17 Trevor Hall would destroy any thoughts #00 Cody VanEvery had of earning a shutout in the Rebels crease, scoring his second of the year from #21 Brad McConnery with only sixteen seconds remaining in the second period.
#88 Jason Johns would re-direct a pass from #12 Russell Longboat past Danko at 1:25 to extend the visitor’s lead to 6-1.
With just over five minutes elapsed into the third, Welland’s #32 Thomas O’Malley and #66 Alex Hill dropped the gloves as tempers continued to flare over the poorly-controlled game.
#33 Mike Miller would make good on Longboat’s feed at 9:51 to close out the game’s offence, as neither team could take advantage of the series of ensuing penalties that occurred during the final ten minutes of play. This physical game ended much like it started, and with 1:35 left to play the final fight of the evening featured the Warlord’s #33 Jeff Borgatti squaring off with #48 Chancy Johnson.
Not dressed for Friday evening’s game were Warlord players #12 Alex Cavasin, #14 Josh Eldridge and #16 Joe Wormald. The team is hopeful that Eldridge and Wormald will return to action tonight, while Cavasin is expected to sit out a couple more weeks due to injury.
The winner of the 50/50 draw, who hailed from the Six Nations reserve, took home a tidy sum of $152. The Warlords would like to thank all who participated in Friday’s draw, and remind everyone that it only takes two dollars to get a chance to take home a large cash prize at each home game. In addition to the cash prize won at last night’s game, sponsored by Lorne’s Tax Preparation Service, there were also several door prizes awarded through the lucky game program, thanks to generous donations from some of our loyal team supporters such at Gatter’s Lacrosse, Merrittville Speedway, the Express Cafe (located inside the Welland Arenas), and Herc’s Muscle Shops.
More great lacrosse action is on tap for tonight as the Warlords (2-3-0) host the Owen Sound Rams (0-1-0)at 7pm, in an evening sponsored by C.C.’s Dugout and Sports Bar.
