DSBN Boys’ Basketball Tournament, Feb. 27
The Quaker Road Boys’ Basketball squad advanced to the finals of the District School Board Basketball of Niagara Tournament, to be held Thursday March 20 at 3:30pm at Eastdale Secondary School in Welland, on the strength of their excellent team play during the day-long competition today at that same location.
Scheduled to play their first game of the day against Vineland, the Comets earned the victory by virtue of forfeit when the Vikings team did not make the trip to play in the tournament due to some confusion as to whether they had previously qualified or not.
Next on the schedule for the Comets was Niagara Falls’ Greendale Elementary and the boys from Quaker Road Elementary had little difficulty setting them down in convincing fashion in a 41-12 rout. The St. Magaret Panthers were next on the docket, and proved to be a much more formidable opponent, defeating the Comets 44-31. The Comets stumbled out of the gate and allowed St. Margaret’s to pull out to an early 22-3 advantage, before closing to within eight points as the game progressed. Unfortunately, the Panthers, and particularly Devon Rymarchuk, were too much to contain on this occasion. The Comets are looking forward to avenging this loss with their next opportunity coming when the two teams meet again in the finals.
The Quaker Road boys returned to their winning ways during their final match of the day, the semi-final game versus the Virgil Vikings. The Comets overpowered the Vikings in a 44-26 victory to set up the rematch with the Panthers who won easily in the other semi-final tilt on the adjacent hardwood.
UPDATE: I wasn’t able to make it back for the Championship Day as planned, but neither did several of the Quaker Road Comet players, and their short-staffed squad ended up falling to the Panthers by 13 points.
