Oakville Rangers vs. Welland L.J. Walters Insurance Tigers (Minor Bantam AAA)

After three straight regular-season road losses and an early exit from the Lindsay Tournament over the past week-and-a-half, the Welland L.J. Walters Insurance Tigers must have really been looking forward to playing a game at home for once.  This team has not seen the confines of the friendly Welland Arena for nearly an exact month, so I’m sure the support of the home crowd was appreciated in tonight’s 5-2 win over the Oakville Jr. Rangers.

Welland trailed early in this one as Oakville’s captain #4 David DePascal scored only 2:17 into the game from #14 Mark Jankowski and #11 Mark McMahon.  Welland would manage to tie the game on #8 Bryce Brochu’s marker at 6:12, which was assisted by #10 Travis Sheldrake and #12 Jared Molnar.

The game remained tied until 1:34 of the second period when #17 Morgan Lavoie put home passes from #16 Damien Lalonde and Brochu for a 2-1 lead.  Oakville countered at 9:50 on a tally from #7 Connor Hakime, on assists from #8 Alex Grolmus and #10 Nolan Metzler.  The teams skated tied at 2-2 until Lavoie put home a short-handed marker for his second goal of the night at 14:33 of the second frame.  Lavoie’s goal was set-up by #11 Denis Creighton and #30 Trent Podrebarac, who not only had a good game stopping pucks in his end but helped his own cause by starting off this scoring play.

#18 Brooker Muir notched an insurance marker at 4:41 of the third, by beating Oakville netminder #29 Jason Boston, on assists from #2 Cameron Blakely and #7 Kevin Rotter for a 4-2 home lead, and #19 Cole McKnight rounded out the offence with a goal from #9 Brett Larocque and Molnar to make it 5-2 at 13:43.

Neither power-play connected on the evening with Welland going 0-for-1 and Oakville unsuccessful in three chances.  Podrebarac faced between fifteen to twenty shots on the evening, but came up big on half-a-dozen great scoring chances from the Rangers.  Oakville’s Boston was fired upon just over twenty times on the evening, letting five past him.

Welland improves to 8-12-8 with the victory and will hope to continue their winning ways at home on Friday evening as they host the Burlington Eagles at 8:20pm.
