Grimsby (Green) vs Welland Wine & Supplies (Blue) [Midget HL Playoffs]

Last night’s playoff game did not get off to the best start for the Welland Wine & Supplies Midgets as they were assessed a delay-of-game penalty at the 0:00 miunte-mark for not taking to the ice in time for the warm-ups after some confusion regarding the game’s actual starting time.  Nevertheless, the team did not seem to show any ill effects from lack of warm-up time and easily overcame an early one-goal deficit to rout visiting Grimsby by a 9-2 final score.

#12 Adam Bonham of Grimsby scored from #7 Daniel Bevan and #10 Ryan Courtney to stake the visitors to their only lead of the game at 4:58 of the first period, but it was all Welland from then on, in large part due to their power-play prowess.  #1 Nick Cherwinsk scored his first of three on the evening, an unassisted marker at 5:49, to knot the game at one before Welland took a one-goal lead into the second period on a goal by #16 Cory Blair, which was assisted by #9 Ryan Varga and #3 Brett Lydiatt at 8:19.

Welland continued their domination in the middle frame, scoring five times, including three times on consecutive powerplays to stretch their lead to 7-1 by period’s end.  #3 Brett Lydiatt scored once and assisted twice in the period, with #6 Brock Walton also scoring one and adding a single assist during the fifteen minutes. #15 Steve Jaschke recorded a pair of goals and Nick Cherwinsk scored his second of the game in the period as well.  Assists on the above goals were chipped in from #2 Znak Ovenden, #5 Paul Cupola, #7 Dylan Martins, #9 Ryan Varga and #11 Mitchell Marrone.

The final period saw Cherwinsk complete his hat-trick on the power-play from Blair and Coulter only 0:47 after the initial face-off.  Grimsby would respond with a power-play tally of their own, as Bonham collected his second of the game from #6 John Csatary and #9 Peter D. at 2:13.  Welland finished off the offence with a goal from #8 Cameron Brousseau at 12:11 on helpers from Cherwinsk and Martins.

Grimsby was 1-for-3 with the man-advantage while Welland struck 4-of-5 times on the power-play on the evening, which was the diffence in the game.  Welland netminder #30 Aaron Tardif had a much easier time in goal last evening than his counterparts at the other end of the ice, #30 Adam Haluszka and #1 Keith Richter, who split time in the Grimsby crease.
