Day One – Round Robin

Fort Erie Jr. Meteors vs. Grimsby Peach Kings

Friday night’s second game of the evening, played in the Main Arena, saw the Fort Erie Jr. Meteors slip past the Grimsby Peach Kings 3-2.  #12 Dalton  Tartaglia posted Fort Erie to a 1-0 lead at 8:49 of the first on an assist from #9 Michael Graham before Grimsby replied with a tally from #5 Daniel Scotland at 9:59 from #16 Christina Putigna and #2 Jonathan Kovacevic.

The Jr. Meteors would score two power-play goals in the second period to open up a 3-1 advantage in the contest.  #10 Brad Piques would knock in passes from #8 Jordan Yandeau and #5 Owen Jacobs at 2:05 and Tartaglia would record his second of the game from #14 Bryce Martin and #13 Anthony Infurna at 6:38.

The Peach Kings would narrow the gap at 8:21 of the final stanza, however, #30 Nolan Von Kalckreuth and the Jr. Meteors would have no part in allowing a comeback, slamming the door shut the rest of the way.  #1 James Waring patrolled the crease for the Peach Kings in the loss.

The only two penalties of the game were assessed to Grimsby, resulting in a Jr. Meteors power-play that was a perfect 2-for-2 on the night.

Day Three – Championship Game

Fort Erie Meteors vs. Welland Herbal Magic Tigers

These two teams put on a classic championship game which stretched into overtime before a winner was decided.  After Fort Erie outshot Welland 7-0 in the first period, both teams neutralized the other with some excellent defensive play.  The Jr. Meteors would strike first, with #4 Bryce Biller scoring from #8 Jordan Yandeau and #14 Bryce Martin at 9:35 of the middle frame, before Welland fought back to tie it at 14:38 of the third period on a goal from #15 Nicholas Fitzgerald that was set up by passes from #17 Jeremy Riso and #10 Nickolas Marrone.

Starting goaltenders, #30 Nolan Von Kalckreuth of Fort Erie and #30 Michael Mayes both played spectacular throughout the game, with Mayes facing quite a few more difficult scoring chances in his direction, particularly in the early stages of the game.  Mayes was injured in the final minutes of the third period and was replaced by #1 Isaac Ricard who played equally impressive in the relief role.

The Jr. Meteors would take home the championship on a goal at 7:54 of the overtime period, but unfortunately, I was unable to obtain the scoring play from the timekeeper’s box.  Fort Erie outshot Welland overall by a 18-11 margin.

Congratulations to both teams on fine regular seasons and for putting on a memorable performance in the Championship final.
