Toronto Marlboros Holiday Classic, Dec. 26-30

The Welland All-Star Sportswear Tigers competed in the Toronto Marlboros Holiday Classic in Etobicoke during the weekend of December 26-30, compiling a 1-2-1 in round-robin play and failing to advance further into the extremely competitive post-Christmas competition.

12/26 4:30pm  Oshawa Minor Generals vs. Welland All-Star Sportswear Tigers

Welland started the tournament on Boxing Day by getting edged by the Oshawa Minor Generals 3-2.  The Tigers took the early lead at 3:23 of the first on a goal by #18 John Langel, assisted by #4 Robert Wormald before the Generals responded with goals in the second period by #18 Luke Laszkiewicz and #5 Mitchell Mercer.  Laszkiewicz’s goal came at 5:32 on a helper from #9 Charles Cooper, while Mercer’s goal was assisted by #6 Mitchell Chapman at 10:03.  The Tigers rebounded quickly, with #14 Doug Steers tying the game on an assist from Wormald forty-six seconds later at 10:49.

#11 Dalton Smith recorded the game-winning goal for Oshawa on an unassisted marker that came at 14:13 of the third. #1 Eric Heenan would record the win while #1 Matt Michaud would take the loss.  The Generals would not convert on any of the six power-play opportunities they were handed, while the Tigers could not score during thier only powerplay chance of the game.

12/27 12:30pm Welland All-Star Sportswear Tigers vs. Brantford 99ers

Five overtime periods were not enough to break the deadlock between the Welland All-Star Sportswear Tigers and Brantford 99ers in Welland’s second round-robin game of the Toronto Marlboros Holiday Classic.  Brantford’s #55 Dylan Moesker tallied at 9:00 of the first, assisted by #77 David Mazurek and #44 Andrew Farlow to open the game’s scoring before Welland’s #9 Tanner Pagendam answered back at 12:10, assisted by #8 Eric Finlay and #10 Paul Moskaylak.

Welland would then assume a 2-1 lead on a goal by #11 Braden Curry at 0:22 of the second period, on a helper from #3 Mackenzie Seebach.  This lead held until Brantford’s #12 Jacob Schira recorded a power-play marker from #6 Drew Berkel and Mazurek to knot the game at two.

Welland was 0-for-1 with the man-advantage while Brantford was 1-for-3.  #30 Chris Croteau filled the Tiger’s net while #1 Justin Garner was patrolling the crease for the Generals in the 2-2 stalemate.

12/27 8:20pm Toronto Jr. Canadiens vs. Welland All-Star Sportswear Tigers

The Toronto Jr. Canadians exploded for six goals in the first period to soundly put away the Welland All-Star Sportswear Tigers 8-2 in Welland’s third round-robin contest at the Toronto Marlboro’s Holiday Classic.

#6 J. McFarland would pace the Canadiens with a hat-trick of goals as well as an assist.  #92 C. Basily would net a goal and three helpers for a four-point evening as well.  #14 C. McNaughton would also provide three assists during the game.  #87 C. Sarault would find the net once and assist once, while #7 N. Scwartz, #61 T. Toffoli and #12 D. Smith-Pelly would also light the lamp behind Welland’s #1 Matt Michaud.  #24 Z. Shapiro and #10 R. Brace would record two assists each, with #3 M. Sullivan helping on a single goal.

Welland’s offense came from #4 Robert Wormald with two goals (one on a penalty shot) and #18 John Langel.  #10 Paul Moskaylak would provide the only assist for the Tigers.  The Toronto Jr. Canadiens would go 2-for-4 with the man-advantage while the Tigers were held scoreless during four power-play chances.

12/28 7:10pm Welland All-Star Sportswear Tigers vs. Upper Canada Cyclones

The Welland All-Star Sportswear Tigers would finish of thier appearance at the Toronto Marlboros Holiday Classic by beating up on the Upper Canada Cyclones in a 6-1 final during their last round-robin game.  After #97 N. Ouderkirk of the Cyclones put his team on the scoreboard at 3:57 of the first period on a helper from #68 R. Vincent, the Tigers rallied with six unanswered goals to finish off their tournament in fine fashion.

#10 Paul Moskaylak lit the lamp twice, with #3 Mackenzie Seebach #6 Trevor Sheldrake, #8 Eric Finlay and #15 Edward Creighton providing the rest of the offense for the Tigers.  #4 Robert Wormald, #11 Braden Curry #16 Josh Williams and #19 Rob Elmer piled on two assists each to provide #1 Matt Michaud with more than enough goals to backstop them to the win.

Welland would convert on 1-of-7 powerplay chances, while the Upper Canada Cyclones were held off the scoresheet during five short-handed situations for the Tigers.  #29 C. Van Allen would record the loss in goal for the Cyclones.
