Thorold Oldtimers Sports Association Blackhawks vs. Welland Internet Access Worldwide Tigers

Believing that it is better to give than receive at this time of year, the Welland Internet Access Worldwide Tigers really gave it to the visiting Thorold Oldtimers Sports Association Blackhawks on Friday evening in Minor Midget A action at the Welland Main Arena.  The Tigers exploded for 11 goals, defeating the visitors by a 11-4 final.

The game certainly did not start out that way, as Thorold’s #4 connected four seconds into their first man advantage of the evening, for a 1-0 Thorold lead at 1:01 of the first.  #6 Shayne Stevenson, falling to his knees, would score at 7:06 to tie the game at one.  #2 Znak Ovenden would record his first of three goals, on the powerplay at 9:01, to put the home side ahead for good.  #14 Josh Gervais threw a pass from behind-the-net to the tape of #19 Tyler Borgatti for another power-play goal and a 3-1 Welland lead at 10:53.

#14 Gervais would score one of his own, sliding a backhand behind Thorold’s #30 for a 4-1 advantage forty-nine seconds into the middle period.  Thorold would respond with two quick tallies, at 1:02 and 1:45 to narrow the gap to 4-3.  #14 Gervais would light the lamp for his second of the game at 7:07 to make it 5-3 but the Blackhawks #4 would score his second of the night at 8:51 to put them within one once again at 5-4.

From there on it was all Tigers.  #6 Stevenson, #19 Borgatti and #2 Ovenden would all record their second goals of the game before the end of the second period.  #14 would assist on Ovenden’s second of the night, with 29.4 left to play in the period, to give the Tigers a comfortable 8-4 advantage.

In the third, #2 Ovenden would net his hat-trick goal on the powerplay at 7:11 before #8 Spencer Giles would add his name to the scoresheet at 11:19.  #19 Borgatti would wait until 15.5 seconds remaining before recording his third of the night to close out the scoring in the 11-4 convincing home victory.  #30 Matt Coloumbe put on a good show in the Tigers’ net, making several keys stops to spark his team, and earning the win.

The Tigers would outshoot the Blackhawks 37-31.  Amazingly, there were more penalties called than there were goals scored in this one, as each team enjoyed the man-advantage seven times during the contest.  Thorold would go 1-for-7 with the extra man, while Welland would 3-for-7.

The Niagara Falls Thunder will make the trek to the Rose City for Friday evening’s battle between regional rivals in the Tigers’ next game.
