Grey-Bruce Save Sight Vision Centre Highlanders vs. Welland E.S. Fox Limited Tigers
The Welland E.S. Fox Limited Tigers put in a sparkling performance against the visiting Grey-Bruce Save Sight Vision Centre Highlanders, defeating them 5-0 in SCTA Major Bantam AAA action on a rare Saturday afternoon contest. Used to battling in low-scoring games, the Tigers provided thier fans with an early Christmas present by delivering their first five-goal output of the season.
#20 Shane McLean stopped 21 shots for his third shutout of the year, with his best save coming at the two minute mark of the first when he stopped an on-rushing Highlanders forward, deflecting his breakaway scoring chance into the corner.
Welland nearly scored scant seconds into the middle period when #17 Matt Dagenais sent a laser from the blueline that was tipped in front and just drifted inches wide of the post. #15 Brett Lustri would float one in on the Grey-Bruce netminder at 3:15 that fluttered its way past him for a 1-0 Tigers lead. #9 Adam Mataya would add some insurance for the home side, by lighting the lamp at 7:37. #14 Dylan Gatt would produce the Tigers’ third goal of the game on a great individual effort and series of smooth moves, scoring under the waterbottle at 9:44, for a three-goal advantage heading into the last period of play.
#14 Gatt would tally his second of the game, at 1:46 of the third, by slipping to the backhand to outwit Highlander goaltender #33 Marx. #18 Matt Mateljan would round out the scoring by converting on the power-play at 7:37 to complete the 5-0 shutout for the home side.
The Tigers improved to 7-12-1 with the win. Welland went 1-for-3 with the man-advantage and fired off 40 shots during the 40 minutes of play. Welland killed off the only penalty that they were assessed during their very disciplined, great team-wide effort.
Next up is a road contest in Hamilton on Tuesday evening before the team returns home to square off the next night versus the Guelph Storm Cooperators.
