Hamilton Red Wings vs. Welland Front Row Sports Tigers (Major Midget AAA)

In a complete reversal from last evening’s exhibition game against West Seneca, the Welland Front Row Sports Tigers, faced much stiffer competition in the form of the Hamilton Reps Red Wings who came to town this evening.

Hamilton started off the scoring at 2:03 of the first period, before Welland tied the game at one, with their first of two power-play goals on the evening at 4:07. Hamilton responded at 6:08 to tie the game at two and then took a 3-2 lead at 12:31. Welland was able to tie the game up at three at the 14:35 mark and the teams remained tied throughout the rest of the first period and during the entire second period.

Hamilton took a 4-3 advantage at 1:43 in the third period, but Welland once again came back to tie the game with 3:58 remaining in the game. Hamilton scored the winning goal with only 2:18 remaining in the game to earn the 5-4 victory in a very evenly-matched see-saw game.

There were moments where tempers flared, and the officials did not call a very good game in many respects. One positive for the Welland squad tonight was when they managed to kill off a 5-minute major penalty assessed for what appeared to be an unintentional knee-on-knee collision.

This was Hamilton’s first victory of the preseason as well as Welland’s first loss of the preseason. Both teams, unofficially, went 2-7 on the power-play.
