Grimsby Cambridge Homes Peach Kings vs. Welland Young’s Insurance Tigers

The Welland Young’s Insurance Tigers struck quickly, with #9 Justin Lafontaine beating the Grimsby Cambridge Homes netminder #30 only nine seconds after the opening face-off.  Grimsby tied the game nearly three minutes later when #9 skated in with #14 on a 2-on-1 and beat Tigers keeper #2 Dylan Tait.  Grimsby would also tally with only 9.5 seconds remaining in the first, when #8 got one past Tait.

#5 Josh Nero let loose on a shot while skating down the left wing that seemed to handcuff the Peach Kings tender, and found the mesh at 2:32 of the middle frame for a two-all contest.  Peach Kings #9 would record his second goal of the game by beating #2 Tait over the shoulder with 2:14 left to play before the intermission to edge his team ahead.

A fantastic set-up from #16 Ryan “Bubba” Dakin released #5 Josh Nero to skate in all alone at 3:40 of the third and beat the Grimsby goaltender for the 3-3 tie.  #10 Evan Garrett had a great point-blank chance with 7:10 left to play but was foiled by an excellent stop from the Peach King netminder.

Both goaltenders were impressive on the day as was Bantam house league call-up, #18 Kyle Moreau, who gelled immediately with his Tigers teammates and made an impact for the home side in his first opportunity to play for them this season. He is simply the latest of the recent call-ups who  have made the most of their opportunities to play at the higher level, from Ryan Dakin to the Beaudoin twins, Nicholas and Sebastien, all these boys should be proud of the role they are playing in helping this team remain competitve while struggling through injuries.

The Tigers now sit at 7-4-2 heading into Sunday’s contest on the road versus the 6-9-0 Wainfleet Wild. Welland outshot Grimsby by a 30-27 margin with both teams going 0-for-2 with the man-advantage.
