Wainfleet #2 Buckner’s Source for Sports Wild vs.  Welland Royal Canadian Legion Br.  #4 (Niagara District Bantam Local League)

The Wainfleet Buckner’s Source for Sports Wild  ran “wild” Thursday evening over their hosts, the Welland Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 bantams, thanks to a dominating effort by Wild forward #88.

Both teams skated through a cautious first period, with neither team creating any threatening scoring chances, with Welland holding most of the play in the Wainfleet zone, but only managing five shots on Wild goalie #33 during the period.

#88 took over in the second period, scoring a natural hat-trick and then adding another before the period ended to build up a 5-0 Wild lead at the intermission.  His first three goals all started in the same manner, using his speed to rush in on the right wing past the Welland defenders.  On his first goal, scored at 1:08 of the second, he managed to find the short-side on Welland netminder #30 Jake Doucet.  Welland would then record one of their best chances to score nearly seven minutes in, after #11 Cameron Chitty received a nice pass from #7 Daniel Jansen, but could not beat the Wild goaltender who made a great save on the play.

#88 broke in on the right wing at 8:31 of the second and beat #30 Doucet by skating around to the left side of the goal and tucking it in on his forehand after #30 Doucet committed to the deke.  Just over a minute later, the scene was repeated but this time, #88 jammed the puck in the short-side, although it appeared that #30 Doucet had it well-covered.

#6 tallied for the Wild twelve seconds later to make it 4-0 in favour of the visitors.  #1 Ryan Humphreys replaced #30 Doucet in the Welland net with 2:54 remaining in the period, as part of their regular game-sharing role, but was beaten by #88 on the first shot he faced in the game, as the Wild forward lit the lamp from a clear shot on net from the slot area.

Forty-seven seconds into the third period #88 struck once again, banging home a rebound for a 6-0 lead.  #16 Ryan Bollman scored the lone Welland goal with 5:37 left to play, firing off a beautiful shot to foil the shutout bid of Wild netminder #33.  After #88 scored his sixth of the game, on a pass from #6, only 23 seconds later, #16 Bollman generated another great scoring chance for the home side, nearly putting a nifty backhand past the Wild goaltender.

Overall, Wainfleet outshot Welland by a 29-14 margin, thanks in large part to a strong second period which saw them overwhelm Welland seventeen shots to three.  It was a relatively penalty-free game, with Welland being given the only man-up situation of the contest, but failing to capitalize.

This second consecutive loss puts Welland’s record at 9-3-2, heading into their next game Saturday morning at home against the visiting Port Colborne #1 (Teal) Sailors.
