St. Paul Patriots vs. Notre Dame Fightin’ Irish (Sr. Boys NRHSAA Hockey)

The Notre Dame Fightin’ Irish Sr. Boys Hockey Team kicked off their season at home yesterday hosting the Saint Paul Patriots in a game very reminicsent of international-style hockey.  This very quick-paced, high-energy game featured a lot of very entertaining end-to-end rushes and displayed some of the most skilled hockey you will see anywhere in this age group.

#13 Steven Jaschke opened the game’s scoring at 1:13 of the first period, staking the Irish to a 1-0 lead before the Patriots tied the game at 6:34 of the same period. After the Irish’s #19 was stoned on a breakaway mid-way through the period by Patriots netminder #1, Notre Dame’s #18 Mike Richard scored with 5.5 seconds remaining in the first to put them back on top 2-1 heading into the break.

Solid netminding was on display at both ends of the ice as well, when Notre Dame’s #30 was called on to make two huge stops early on in the opening half of the second period.  Patriots centreman #8 Aaron Sexton got around the Notre Dame defence with some nifty moves in the offensive zone and was stopped 3:23 into the period, and then #9 Jamie Cardamone was shutdown on a breakaway chance just over three minutes later.  Saint Paul’s #15 Eric Diodatti  would then blast a shot from the blueline, which would go in off the left post at 7:24, for a power-play marker that tied the game at two.

Saint Paul’s #19 Garrett Gallardi nearly scored at 11:08 of the middle frame, but referee Larry Tanguay immediately waved off the goal.  The Patriots would quickly strike back, however, scoring one that counted only thirty seconds later, off the stick of #17 Cam Stewart, to established a 3-2 lead.  #55 of the Patriots would add an insurance marker in the final thirty seconds of the period to put the visitors up by two heading into the intermission.

Saint Paul would score their fifth goal of the contest at 3:46 of the third period when #13 Matt Bennett redirected a pass from Cardamone into the Irish net.  Notre Dame’s #13 Jaschke would record his second goal of the game at 5:24 to edge the Irish closer, but it would not be enough, as the Irish would fall by a final score of 5-3 in their season-opener.

Notre Dame was not able to convert on any of its four man-advantage situations during the game, while the Patriots were 1-for-3 with the powerplay on the day.  St. Paul outshot Notre Dame by a 33-28 margin.  Notre Dame will next see action against Westlane on Tuesday December 18 at 2pm in Welland’s Main Arena.
