Pelham Kim Robinson-RE/MAX Panthers vs. Welland Forge (Niagara District Bantam Local League)

The Welland Forge bantams let one slip away Monday evening, losing 5-3 on home ice to the Pelham Kim Robinson-Re/MAX Panthers in Niagara District Bantam Local League action at the Welland Youth Arena.

After a tenative first period, characterized by several icings, during which Welland Forge recorded only a single shot compared to five from the Panthers, things picked up nicely in the second period. #9 Dustin Secord was forced to make a stellar glove save after he tried releasing the puck to keep the play moving, at the urging of the refereee, and was quickly come upon by a Panthers forward who was able to quickly release a shot on goal only thirty-five seconds into the middle period. #5 Thomas Juran staked the home side to a 1-0 lead at 1:23 of the second when he let loose on a hard shot from the blueline that found its way into the Panthers net. #10 Marcel Leblanc and #6 Dylan Kanyo assisted on the play, which was only the second shot on net they had recorded in the game.

Moments later, #9 Secord was forced to make another spectacular save, robbing the streaking #9 Panther, who tried to deke past #9 Secord and score on his backhand. #10 Marcel Leblanc showed everyone how it is done, walking in all alone on a breakaway, while his team was short-handed, and putting it five-hole on Panther’s netminder #1 at 4:55 of the second for a 2-0 Welland lead.

The Panthers would cut the lead in half at 11:24, with #13 converting on passes from #3 and #11. Pelham would then tie the game at 3:38 of the third period, before Welland Forge would once again resume the lead at 6:10 of the final period. #10 Leblanc picked the pocket of the Panthers defenseman in the offensive zone and fed #6 Kanyo with a beautiful cross-crease pass that he batted into the net for a 3-2 lead.

Pelham quickly replied, scoring only 33 seconds later to once again tie the game. The game-winning goal was produced by Panther #9 at 9:53 of the third, before the game was sealed with an empty-net goal with 15.3 seconds left to play.

Pelham outshot Welland by a wide margin, 37-14 but could not convert on either of the two power-play chances they were given on the night. Welland showed a dominance in the face-off circle all evening, winning most draws very cleanly, but easily gave up possession on several occasions by simply icing the puck instead of trying to carry it down the ice. If Welland would have kept possession longer by playing smarter and not giving away the puck so freely tonight, there was a good chance they would have been able to maintain the lead and pull out the victory. Instead, Welland Forge, who were undefeated in their previous four games, will now look to regroup against their next opponent, the Wainfleet CM Steele Insurance Wild on the road Tuesday evening.
