Welland Mountainview Homes Tigers vs. Grey-Bruce Dan Rear Lawn Service Highlanders (Major Peewee AAA)
The Grey-Bruce Dan Rear Lawn Service Highlanders once again received stellar goaltending but ended up on the losing end of a 5-1 contest to the visiting Welland Mountainview Homes Tigers on Sunday afternoon at the Chesley Arena. #29 Poole stopped 28 of 33 shots fired at the Highlander’s net, and his teammates largely managed to shutdown the powerhouse Tigers until the third period before the Tigers found their groove in the final fifteen minutes of action.
Welland illuminated the scoreboard at 6:08 of the first period on a fast-moving shot from the blueline, off the stick of #14 Tyler Jackson, to put the visitors ahead 1-0 while they enjoyed the man-advange.
Grey-Bruce would capitilize on one of the few rebounds that Tigers netimder #30 Spencer Smith surrendered to tie the game at one with only 28.3 seconds left to play in the opening period.
While each team fired off twelve shots in the second period, neither team could light the lamp, keeping the game tied 1-1 heading into the final fifteen minutes of play. The Tigers saw themselves two men short for 1:17 at one point in the middle frame, but stonewalled the Highlanders and successfully killed off both penalties with a spectacular defensive effort by all of the penalty-killers.
The turning point of the game came at 7:18 when an unidentified Tigers player made a great feed from behind the Highlander’s net, as he was being hit, getting the puck out front to #10 Anthony Difruscia, who made no mistake from in close to stake the visitors to a 2-1 lead.
#18 Hunter Garlent added to the lead at 8:32, assisted from #19 Ben Leishman and #15 Jack Fitzgerald. Garlent then followed up 19 seconds later in his shift with another tally to pull the Tigers ahead 4-1 at 8:51. #17 Zach Olsson would cap things off at 13:50, depositing a #14 Tyler Jackson pass behind Grey-Bruce netminder #29 Poole.
Special mention goes out to two Tigers players who fought though some tough circumstances yesterday to put in great performances. #5 Damien Alfieri and #9 Hunter Salomons were each feeling less than 100% during the four-hour bus trip, but gave 110% effort once they stepped onto the ice inside the beautiful Chesley Arena.
The Tigers went 1-for-7 with the extra man while killing off all five penalties assessed to them during the game. Welland now squares off against regional-rivals, the Niagara Falls Thunder, on Thursday evening on the road before returning home on Saturday to face the Guelph Co-operators Storm.
