Welland Convergys vs. Welland Forge (Niagara District Bantam Local League)
With both of these Welland teams playing well of late, expectations for a great matchup between the two on Saturday morning were not only met, but exceeded in a very entertaining 3-3 draw.
Welland Forge’s #5 Thomas Juran struck first, lighting the lamp at 4:30 of the first period before his counterpart, #5 Kyle Moreau of Welland Convergys replied 23 seconds later to knot the game at one.
#11 Jeremy Gilbert of Welland Convergys pulled his team ahead at 1:12 of the second, and teammate #17 Dylan Pupo used a great deke on a breakaway to score at 2:26, while the team was short-handed, to give them a 3-1 advantage. Convergys’ #3 Jordan Larente stoned #17 Michael Bisson on a great point-blank chance at 10:15 of the middle frame to keep Welland Forge down by two goals.
#12 Brooks Barton tucked one home at 13:04 from #10 Marcel Leblanc to narrow the gap to 3-2, still in favour of Convergys. Barton’s shot from the right face-off circle found its way into the net just inside the left post in one of the prettier goals of the game.
#5 Kyle Moreau nearly restored the two-goal advantage for Convergys with 20 seconds remaining in the second period. A great move by #5 Moreau had #9 Dustin Secord down, but #5 Moreau’s backhand just sailed high of the crossbar. Welland Forge would complete their rally at 11:36 of the third, scoring to tie the game at three. The game was ended by curfew with 2:22 left to play on the clock.
Welland Forge outshot Convergys by a 34-13 margin, with Convergys getting the edge in special teams play by killing off four penalties on the day and notching a short-handed goal in the process.
Both teams will see action this week, with Welland Forge taking on Pelham’s #1 Kim Robinson RE/MAX Panthers (White) at home Monday evening before traveling to Wainfleet on Tuesday night to battle the Wainfleet CM Steele Insurance Wild (White).
Welland Convergys plays in Port Colborne on Tuesday evening when they take on the Port Colborne Sailors (Teal).
