Port Colborne State Farm Sailors vs. Welland MG Stucco Flyers (Niagara District Bantam Local League)

The Welland MG Stucco Flyers peppered Sailors netminder #1 with 47 shots enroute to a 3-2 home victory Saturday morning in Niagara District Bantam Local League action.

#4 Matt Walker detonated a blast from just inside the left face-off circle that sailed over the Sailors netminder’s shoulder for a 1-0 lead at 6:28 of the first.  Port Colborne responded quickly, tying the game only 19 seconds later.  The Flyers had another great chance to score with only :45 left to play in the period when #14 Brandon Kaas picked the pocket of the Sailor’s forward in the neutral zone and skated in all alone, but had the puck slip off his blade at the last minute before he could tuck it behind a beaten Port Colborne netminder.

At 7:56 of the second #10 Stephen Claus had another breakaway opportunity.  After he was foiled on his initial shot he skated around the net and feed a cross-crease pass to #14 Kaas, who made no mistake putting in the biscuit from the left crease area.  #8 Jesse Dzenitis stretched the Flyers lead to 3-1 at 10:06 of the second, roofing a shot from close range.  At 12:13, #4 Walker showed some great hands, putting on a stickhandling clinic through the neutral and offensive zones, beating everyone on the ice on the play except for the Port goaltender.

Port Colborne would inch closer forty-two seconds into the third period, but thanks to a great team effort on defence by the Flyers they would not get the equalizer.  In the last minute of play, #4 Walker showed great defensive ability, taking the Port forward out of the play by keeping him to the outside and along the boards, preventing him from even getting a shot off as he continued with him into the corner to preserve the victory.

Starting goaltender #11 Taylor Whitty made 6 saves on 7 shots for the Flyers during his time in goal today, while #30 Frank Zucchet also looked very impressive, stopping 11 of 12 shots during his apperance during the second half.

The Flyers improve to 10-3 with the win, and face Wainfleet Black on the road on Tuesday evening in their next contest.
