Pelham #2 Mossimo’s Panthers vs. Welland Convergys (Niagara District Bantam Local League)

The Welland Convergys bantams looked good this evening when playing five-on-five against the visiting Pelham Mossimo’s Panthers, but when you gave them the man advantage it was quite a different story.  Their futility on the power-play may well have cost them this game as they were edged 4-3 in Niagara District Bantam Local League action Thursday night.

After Welland’s #17 Dylan Pupo was stoned on a breakaway by Panthers netminder #1 at 4:40 of the first, Pelham created a great chance of their own at the other end and opened the scoring at 5:50 of the first with a short-handed marker, when #17 converted a pass from #9 for a 1-0 Panthers lead.

One minute into the second period #1 Bradley Wall got the better of Pelham’s #16 who had skated in all alone on a breakaway chance.  #17 Pupo would tie the game 1-1 at 4:59 of the second, assisted by #5 Kyle Moreau, and then #12 Eric Robert would put Convergys ahead less than half-a-minute later at 5:24, with helpers going to #15 Justin Duguay and #8 Brett Murray on the play.  This lead was short-lived, however, as the Panthers stormed back, with #17 recording his second of the game, on the power-play, from #9 at 5:48 to knot the game at two.

Welland edged ahead at 1:36 of the third period on a goal from #7 Chad Mack, with #17 Pupo and #12 Robert assisting.  #12 Robert skated in all alone at the four-minute mark but could not land the insurance marker the team needed.  Pelham fought back, with #16 scoring on the break with a nice move, putting the puck to his backhand and behind Convergys netminder #3 Jordan Larente at 5:48.  #6 for Pelham assisted on the play that tied the game at 3-all.

#6 then scored the game-winning goal at 8:32 of the third period, and then the Panthers held off a last-minute surge by Welland to prevail.  #7 Mack had Welland’s best chance to tie the game with 20.5 seconds left, but was not able to get a shot away.

The Panthers outshot Welland 23-19, with each Welland goalie facing roughly an equal number of shots.  Pelham was 1-for-4 with the man-advantage on the night while Welland was 0-3, also surrendering a short-handed marker.

Convergys will take on Welland Forge on Saturday morning in their next game before hitting the road on Tuesday to face Port Colborne Teal.
