Pelham #2 Mossimo’s Panthers vs. Welland MG Stucco Flyers (Niagara District Bantam Local League)

While the Welland MG Stucco Flyers looked very strong for two periods, however, fatigue set in during the final period allowing the Panthers to narrow the deficit considerably. The Flyers managed to hold on long enough to defeat the visiting Pelham Mossimo’s Panthers 4-3 Monday night at the Welland Arena in Niagara District Local League action.

#14 Brandon Kaas put the Flyers ahead 1-0 on the powerplay, on an assist from #4 Matt Walker at 5:18 of the first period. #10 Stephen Claus would record his first of three on the evening with just over two minutes to play in the period, with helpers from #9 Jacob Gaudet and #6 Brandon Seguin, to expand the lead to two goals before Pelham replied with only 25 seconds left to cut the lead in half.

#10 Claus netted his second at 11:19 of the middle frame to restore the two-goal advantage, when #15 Brandon Boss released him on a breakaway opportunity with a great breakout pass.

#11 Taylor Whitty made 16 saves and was sharp in his twenty-minutes and fifty seconds of work tonight. #11 Whitty stoned Pelham’s #7 who skated in all alone nearly four-and-a-half minutes into the second period of play.

Welland had great difficulty in the third period getting the puck out of their own end, thanks to a tightened up defensive effort by the Panthers and their ability to apply much more offensive pressure. Penned into their own end made it difficult for the Flyers to make line changes, causing some long shifts to occur which seemed to tire out the players even quicker as a result. Pelham took advantage of this by scoring two goals, only a minute apart, at 2:58 and 3:58 of the final period to narrow the Flyers lead to onlya single goal.

Once the Flyers were able to get longer periods of rest on the bench in between shifts, their play seem to improve. #9 Gaudet had a great chance to score just under half-way through the final period, as he rushed in on a breakaway, but the puck slipped off his stick just as he spotted an opening to score, and he failed to record a shot on goal during the play. The Flyers, stuck in their own end for much of the start of the period, did not record their first shot on net of the period until alomst the half-way mark.

Pelham’s #10 unleashed a shot from the point which rang off the left goalpost with 6:25 left to play, in their best chance in the late-going to tie the game. #15 Brandon Boss unloaded a shot of his own from the blueline trying to give the Flyers some extra cushion, but his blast was deflected just wide of the net with five-and-a-half left to play. Finally, #13 Chris Davis had an opportunity to put it away with 20 seconds remaining, but was just off-target from the neutral zone. Pelham made a couple attempts in the dying seconds, but could not get the equalizer past #30 Frank Zucchet, who played extremely well in relief of #1 Whitty, in their game-splitting tandem effort.

This marks the ninth win of the season for the Flyers this season. They have come ready to play each night, posting a 9-4-0 record to date, and have proven themselves to be a team to be reckoned with in this division.
