West Lincoln Wrath vs. Welland Lions Club Tigers (Novice A)

The Welland Lions Club Tigers turned in another dominating performance by defeating the visiting West Lincoln Wrath 7-2 on Friday evening at the Welland Main Arena in Novice A divisional play. This comes on the heels of a 5-0 blanking of the Pelham Panthers last Sunday in which netminder #30 Gage Rockwell earned his first shutout of the season.

Each team took advantage of breakaway opportunities in the first period, with #19 Connor Jolliffe opening the game’s scoring at 5:11 followed by #16 for West Lincoln for a one-all tie at the break.

Welland’s #16 Dawson Silenzi pulled the Tigers ahead at 1:53 by depositing a #17 Joshua Croteau pass into the West Lincoln net. #18 Sammy Leclair nearly scored twenty seconds later on another fine scoring chance, but it would be #17 Croteau would would tally the third Tiger’s goal at 8:06 by blasting a shot from the top of the right face-off circle which evaded the grasp of the Wrath netminder #1.

After #5 Ben Otto released a great shot from in close that the Wrath goaltender make an excellent stop on at 1:11 of the third, #14 Brodie Thoms unleashed at shot from the slot area which resulted in a 4-1 advantage for the Tigers at 1:22.

#17 Croteau would add another at 4:45, before #18 Sam Leclair would deposit a goal in the Tigers favour at 6:21 of the final period. #19 Jolliffe would close out the Tigers scoring with his second of the game at 6:58 before the Wrath replied with a goal at 7:44 to settle on the 7-2 final score.

The Tigers controlled the play so completely that nearly the entire game was played in the offensive zone, using only a third of the larger ice surface area of the Main Arena. A tremendous effort by all players, both on offense and defence, contributed to this shutdown of the visiting Wrath and improved the Tigers season record to 3-4-1.

The Welland Lions Club Tigers are competing in the Thorold Beaverloch tournament this weekend before heading to Merritton for a match against the red-hot Bulldogs on Tuesday evening, and then returning home to face-off against the Niagara-on-the-Lake Wolves on Saturday morning.
